Fly Fishing--The Sacred Art: Casting A Fly, A Spiritual Practice
We go fly fishing to catch fish, to experience the rush of adrenaline when a trout rises to the surface, grabs the fly, and the line goes taut. But the fly line is more than a way to connect human beings to fish. Each cast of the fly line connects us to nature, to others and to the Divine Presence.
In this unique exploration of fly fishing as a spiritual practice, a rabbi and an Episcopal priest illuminate what each step on a fly-fishing trip has to teach us about reflection, awe and wonder of the natural world, the benefits of solitude, the blessing of community and the search for the Divine. Tapping the wisdom in the Christian and Jewish traditions, they outline seven steps of a typical fly-fishing trip and the lessons found within:
* The Off-Season and Fly Tying: Anticipation and Preparation
* The Drive to the River: Unplugging from the World
* Wading into the Stream: Finding Our Place in Nature
* Fly Casting: Searching for God at the End of the Line
* Setting the Hook: Life and Death on the Stream
* The Drive Home: Contemplation and Reflection
* "It Was This Big": Sharing Our Stories
For people of all faiths and all levels of fly-fishing experience– or none. Includes "Getting Started," guiding first-time anglers through the basics of fly rod and fishing gear, casting a fly, places to fly fish, and suggested readings and websites.

Bought for a friend
I have a fly fisher friend who just affirmed Judaism after being non-religious into his 50′s. He is (as his wife says) a hippie Jew. He is also incredibly bright and discriminating in his reading tastes. He absolutely loved the book, and I’m looking forward to borrowing it from him.
Why
This book helps me answer the reasons why I love to fly fish.
It’s a great read, filling the gap between fishing and fly tying.
Read this book and maybe you will find why you are a fly fisher.
Truly the Sacred Art
Few books have left me with a longing to join the writers on their fishing journeys, this one did. Our passion of fly fishing truly crosses all levels of education, religion and culture. This books was excellent and I will read it again this winter.
I liked this book from the Spiritual stand point of flyfishing fishing
I like this books reviews so I order not one but two and gave one to my fishing buddy. He though like I did no truer words have been written on this subject.
Captures what so many of us feel
I have followed the Fly Fishing Rabbi for a while and even exchanged an email or two. Then he teams up with a co-religionist of mine and puts out a beautiful book. I plan on using it to do a short church class (where we might get out into G-d’s big outdoor temple and experience life as seen thru flyfishing).
Interesting and inspirational
I enjoyed this book for the inspirational insight and not just the Fly Fishing Instruction. Both men love the tranquility of the water and challenge of catching the fish…as pastors who have busy daily lives. They have different writing styles and goals for the book but that makes it a more interesting read. I love to save quotes for inspiration and there are many in this small book.
