Fly Fishing Diagram
The pilot of a Coast Guard patrol aircraft on a search mission has just spotted a disabled fishing boat?
The pilot of a Coast Guard patrol aircraft on a search mission has just spotted a disabled fishing boat and decided to go in for a closer look. Flying in a straight line at a constant altitude of 1000 ft and at a steady speed of 264 ft/sec, the aircraft passed directly over the boat. How fast was the aircraft receding from the boat when it was 1500 ft from it?
Draw a diagram.
The height of the plane is 1000.
The plane is flying horizontally, so you have a right triangle.
The plane is 1500 feet from the boat, so that’s the hypotenuse.
Using Pythagorean theorem, calculate the horizontal distance = d
Draw a similar diagram representing the speed.
The horizontal line is 264 ft/sec.
v = speed you are looking for
You have similar triangles, so sides are proportional.
