Winter
Run Steelhead (December-April)
With the Winters being very mild on Vancouver Island you
don't have to be very tough to brave the elements. Wet flies
are used almost exclusively for Winter Steelhead as colder
water conditions keep the fish down. Sometimes they can
be so hard to persuade that you practically have to hit
the fish in the nose with the fly for them to take it. This
said, there are times when water temperatures will rise
and the fish will be more than willing to take the fly.
Salmon(July-November)
We offer river, estuary and beach fishing for all five species
of Pacific Salmon that run up the rivers on Vancouver Island.
One of the most exciting methods of catching Salmon is estuary
and beach fishing, casting to sighted schools of fish cruising
in the shallows using floating lines and long leaders. The
river fishing consists of swinging or retrieving wet flies
through the pools and runs where the fish are holding. The
timing for the different Salmon species is as follows: Chinook
Salmon (July-September), Chum Salmon (September-November),
Coho Salmon (July-October), Pink Salmon (July-September)
and Sockeye Salmon (June-July).
Trout
(all year)
Having very mild Winters we are blessed with fishing opportunities
all year round. Rainbow Trout, Coastal Cutthroat, Brown
Trout and Dolly Varden Char are all available to the lake
and river fly fisher. Cutthroat and Dolly Varden are also
available on the beaches and estuaries of some rivers. Some
of the better months for Trout fishing on the Island are
April-December. Nymphs and streamers are mainly used in
the early season.. Once the insect hatches start most fishing
is with a floating line and surface flies. Summer and Fall
bring the return of the Salmon to the rivers, at that time
egg patterns and flesh flies work best.
